I can’t believe it’s March and I’m still working through my sale haul from the New Year! I guess that just goes to show how much wear I get out of my favourite pieces. Also, it might give an indication of how nervous I am to try new looks. In my defence, it’s not been warm enough to wear a coat without sleeves until now. I’d been on the lookout for a sleeveless coat for a while, and when I saw this one in the Next sales just after Christmas I knew it had to be mine. The fabric is a really heavy mix which I really like. It also hangs quite long on me, which I think works well for a chilly spring day.
I’ve got a real thing for grey and maroon together. Thinking about it now, this is quite odd, since they were the colours of a neighbouring school uniform when I was growing up. Oh well, it wasn’t my school uniform! (Mine was bottle green and Blackwatch tartan, if you were wondering.) This pale grey really works with darker colours though I think. It brings a lightness to the outfit for the changing season in comparison to a dark winter coat. Also, it has huge pockets. Anything with huge pockets is a win for me.
Everything apart from the coat in this outfit is pretty old. This maroon jumper is one of my favourite winter pieces, but works well as part of an outer layer in spring too. I’ve also had this mini skirt from H&M in my wardrobe for years. It’s mega high waisted, and a bit too short to wear without tights, but I really like the contrast of the long coat and short skirt. The tights and flat shoe boots keep the outfit modest enough for the office.
Talking of the shoes? Boots? I’m never quite sure. These are a pair I picked up in Vegas a couple of years ago. They’re by surf label Volcom, which has always been on my radar as a cool, laid back brand, born from the skate / surf culture. I visited their store in a mall just outside the main Vegas strip, and they were reduced from something like $90 to $20. Well, that was a no brainer for me! They’re super soft distressed leather, and SO comfy. I love the double buckle detail, and the pale grey goes with just about everything.
